About Whois Lookup
Whois Lookup queries the registry for a domain and returns its public registration record: who the registrar is, when the domain was created and updated, when it expires, the authoritative name servers, the EPP status codes, and whether DNSSEC is enabled. The parsed view surfaces the fields that actually matter; the raw view shows you the full text the registry sent back, in case you need a field the parser missed.
Whois runs over a separate protocol (port 43) that browsers cannot speak. The lookup happens server-side: we ask IANA which registry handles the TLD, then ask that registry for the domain record. For most gTLDs the registrar's whois server is queried as a third hop for richer information.
Most registrars now redact personal contact details under GDPR. The registrar, dates, and status codes are still public, which is what most operational use cases need.
Common use cases: figuring out when a domain expires before it lapses; checking the registrar before a transfer; auditing whether DNSSEC was actually turned on; spotting EPP status flags like 'clientHold' or 'pendingDelete' that explain why a domain isn't resolving.
How Whois Lookup works
- Enter a domain name (no protocol).
- We query whois.iana.org to find the right registry whois server for the TLD.
- We query that registry, then follow the 'Registrar WHOIS Server' pointer if present.
- The combined raw text is parsed for the common fields.
- Both the parsed summary and the full raw text are returned.
When to use Whois Lookup
- Find out when a domain expires before it accidentally lapses.
- Confirm the current registrar before initiating a transfer.
- Verify DNSSEC is actually enabled at the registry.
- Read EPP status codes (clientHold, pendingDelete, serverTransferProhibited) when a domain misbehaves.
- Check the authoritative name servers the registry has on file vs the ones DNS returns.
- Look up creation date for a new domain you suspect was recently registered.
Why choose Utilix Whois Lookup
- Two-hop query (registry + registrar) for richer data than single-server tools.
- Parsed summary for the fields you actually care about, raw view for everything else.
- Free, no signup, no rate limits beyond fair use.
- We don't log domains you look up.
