Common uses include figuring out a fair tip after dinner, splitting a check evenly between friends, working out exactly how much each person owes when settling a group bill on a payment app, and estimating the total cost before ordering when you have a fixed budget. Standard US tipping is 18–20% for table service; 15% is on the low end of acceptable for adequate service; 25%+ is generous. In most of Europe, service is usually included — a 5–10% top-up is appreciated but not expected. Outside the US, check local norms before defaulting to American percentages.
